Overview of the Semantic Web

Friday, April 30th, 2004

Professor Wendy Hall (head of electronics and comp sci here in Southampton) and Professor Jim Hendler (University of Maryland) appeared on a Radio 4 programme yesterday discussing the Semantic Web. It’s a good layman’s overview and worth a listen over your morning’s email or blog browsing.

More echoes

Friday, April 30th, 2004

This is a follow up to my previous post, I was going to leave it as a comment on Diego’s blog but it got too long…
I’m gutted not to be living in Dublin anymore! Presentations by Deigo and Doc in the last week and I’m stuck here in Southampton… still at least I’ll get [...]

Echoes: P2P architectures must reclaim the net

Friday, April 30th, 2004

A few days ago I read this post (read the comments too) by Sean McGrath on the difference between Push and Pull interaction models. I thought of RSS and how the user perceives it as a Push model (i.e., they subscribe to a feed and content is pushed to them) but under the covers [...]

Symmetries

Friday, April 30th, 2004

Earlier in the week I read these articles (and an email and various posts from Danah) on the problem of digital content which just won’t die, and then this article on digital content which doesn’t last long enough. Odd, but probably of no significance.

Bumper Blogging Day

Friday, April 30th, 2004

Well, things have been a little dry here lately so I’ll dump a couple of things out there today.
It must be Spring!. There are a couple of resident pairs of Malards nesting at the University (and when I say at the University, I mean in the pond just outside the staff club and the [...]

Red Boxes

Monday, April 26th, 2004

Actually, I thought many of the red telephone boxes were actually listed buildings but perhaps that is only in certain locations. Certainly, I’d have no objections to the removal of the glass telephone boxes although occasionally a public telephone can be very useful.
Update: or is it the old blue police boxes (a.k.a the Tardis) [...]

Gmail

Wednesday, April 21st, 2004

Blogger just offered me the chance to sign up for Gmail, which I accepted. I have no real need for yet another email address but it is interesting to see the Gmail site and ad-serving in action. I’ve been probing the system by sending sensitive emails to myself as if someone was discussing [...]

The Web, for kids.

Thursday, April 15th, 2004

Tim Berners-Lee (sorry, Sir Tim) was recently awarded €€1million for his work on the Web. That’s only mildly interesting, but it did provoke a visit to his personal page at the W3C. Among the very sensible rules for emailing him, downloads of slides and talks, I noticed a link to Kids’ Questions. [...]

“As Russell has pointed out, relations, especially spatial relations, are very puzzling entities.” - Space is the Machine, Bill Hillier
This was my result from an interesting exercise put forward by Caterina (via Purse Lip Square Jaw).

netbeans 3.6

Thursday, April 15th, 2004

netbeans 3.6 (a Java tool for you non-programmers) was released the other day and I must admit that I am pretty blown away by it. I’ve been using netbeans for about 18months and I’ve had a love hate relationship with it. I switched from Borland JBuilder after I far outgrew their free ‘Personal’ [...]
