Fire Update

Monday, October 31st, 2005

Zepler (my building) is the white one on the right and seems to be ok — we should be returning to it in a day or two. Obviously the fab and optoelectronics research centre on the left are gutted. There’s apparently a lot of damage to the grey building, but it looks worse than it [...]

Electronics and Computer Science Dept. on Fire

Sunday, October 30th, 2005

One of the Electronics and Computer Science buildings (Mountbattan) at Southampton University caught fire this morning. This building is situated next to mine (Zepler) and connected by a bridge. I’m not sure about the state of Zepler although I suspect it’ll be alright. The fire apparently started in the fabrication lab. It’s currently raining lightly [...]

GPS Dog-tracking

Friday, October 28th, 2005

I’ve been known to attach GPS devices to dogs in the past but, for some reason, actually selling GPS dog collars just seems wrong.

It’s been 10 days since my last post

I hope you enjoyed the break from my usual drivel — but now the torture must resume. Here’s some random stuff from my history file over the last week: Volume 3, Issue 3 of Ad Hoc Networks contains two survey articles of adhoc routing protocols and clock synchronisation Generics support in Java 5 had me [...]

According to RTE, [C&C] also successfully extended the distribution of its Magner cider brand to the greater London area…’Magners has exceeded our expectations in the UK, while Bulmers, with the benefit of good summer weather, delivered strong growth in Ireland,’ One of the best things about Southampton, particularly the Pitcher & Piano bar in Ocean [...]

"The things you see when you’re out without a shotgun"

Friday, October 7th, 2005

Apparently someone has now come up with ‘green’ cigarette butts, which biodegrade in 2 months instead of never for the current variety. Never? Seeing smokers casually throw away their cigarette butts is one thing that really pisses me off — and that was before I realised that they never biodegrade. So, this got me thinking [...]

That’s scary. No that’s scary!

Thursday, October 6th, 2005

Scientists in the U.S. (where else?) have recreated the Spanish flu virus which, in 1918, killed 1% of all human life on this planet. And they’ve done so in the second-highest contamination level. That’s scary enough although not as scary as the Guardian makes it out to be. The reseachers working with this virus won’t [...]

Mayday Warning Signs

Wednesday, October 5th, 2005

This post, on the warning signs that it’s time to quit your job, isn’t that interesting but it did get me thinking. I’ve worked for 3 companies, all three of them are now deceased but I’ve never been made redundant (I left a week, a few months and a year before they went under, respectively). [...]

A few mentionable things

Wednesday, October 5th, 2005

A cartoon in the Irish Times, via planet potato Nee Naw Blog: stories from an ambulance control room told with wit and humour. via Random Acts of Reality The American quoted on the BBC saying: Why is letting a Muslim nation, such as Turkey, into the EU such a big deal? Hmmm… the hypocrisy here [...]
