Dropkick Murphys

Dropkick Murphys are what Green Day might sound like if you gave them bagpipes, a bodhran, accordian and a dash of Irish heritage. Their track “Shipping up to Boston” featured in (the brilliant film) The Departed (or on the trailer — if that’s all you can find). Dropkick Murphys describe their goal as

to blend the musical influences we had grown up with (Punk Rock, Irish Folk, Rock, and Hardcore) into one loud, raucous, chaotic, and often out of tune mix that we could call our own

After listening to their album, “Sing Loud, Sing Proud”, I can definitely say that they’ve achieved all their aims. So much so that I’ve ordered their most recent album “The Warrior’s Code”. You can hear a selection of their tracks on their MySpace page (hey! the first one I’ve ever visited) and and there’s also a review of their part in the film.

Whilst on the subject of The Departed, it does contain one of the best put-down lines I’ve heard in a while:
Police Camera Tech: Who the fuck are you?
Dignam: I’m the guy that does his job. You must be that other guy.
