Retail Therapy

I’ve been quite depressed and restless lately. I’m not really sure what the problem is although there are plenty of good candidates. Anyway, for over a week I’ve had an overwhelming desire to plonk down a wad of cash on some extravagant piece of electronics: an XBox360, 20″ monitor, headphones for the gym, Apple ipod mini, Tamron 17-50 lens, Sony A700, Sony CZ 16-80, whatever. The thing is that if I did buy any of those things (and yeah, I want and can probably justify them), I’d be even more miserable because of spending our limited money irresponsibly. I guess this reflects fairly badly on society’s consumerism culture and my place in it.

Buying things to make me happy is the quick fix and isn’t really going to solve my problems so I’ve resolved to only buy any of these items when I can do so without guilt or regret.

  • I have the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 EX DC Macro lens for Canon and I have to say I’m really pleased with it. Gives nice sharp photos and it’ll focus really close to give you a macro capability aswell. I seem to have it permanently on the camera. I used to never use the short kit lens that came with my 400D. I would use Mikes old 70 -200 lens instead now I only rarely use that and prefer the Sigma instead.
If you’re in the market for a new camera, why not consider changing to Canon alltgether. There’s a new Canon 50D out this month.
You could try dropping really large Camera shaped hints on Hillary for Christmas.
If you’re worried about retail therapy just do what I do. Obsess over comparing specs and prices for months and months and then when you finally decide there’ll be something newer out and you’ll need to start the process over and over again.

  • Sorry, I like playing the underdog so I’ll definitely be sticking with Minolta/Sony. I’d never switch to Canon — Nikon maybe, but never Canon — it’s just too popular for me.

Hilary has already taken on-board the various camera/lens hints but in the end it all comes from the same pot of money :-(

  • Ah c’mon Jamie you can join the cool croud if you want to. We’ll have you buying apple stuff before long. I didn’t see an IPhone on your list. Must have been an oversight. Since Mike bought a Mac book pro he’s been talking about getting an IPhone and all sorts of I stuff.
Did you try the whole “It’s an investment in the Family” line with Hilary.
You never know it might work.
I’ve been looking dreamily at the Canon 50D and the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L IS lens but thats complete pie in the sky. I don’t think even I could justify spending 2.5k on new camera stuff even if it keeps singing oh so sweetly at me.
PS have you seen sterling recently? Very competitively priced camera stuff from the UK.

If you absolutely need retail therapy then you should start off with a filter and see how you get on from there!
