Lessons from a life of startups, coding, countryside, and kids
So, yesterday Firefox 1.0 was released. Everyone downloaded it (including me, upgrading from a previous version), and then everyone blogged about changing the world from IE to Firefox. Don’t! You see, at this stage you probably haven’t tried installing a flash plugin or installing any of the neat extensions. Mozilla’s update service is so woefully under-resourced that you can’t even contact it most of the time. On the occasions you get lucky with a connection there’s no hope of the whole page being downloaded or of actually installing enything. Right now, plugins and extensions are a painful experience.
Sometime next week you can recommend Firefox to family and friends. By then the Mozilla servers should have recovered but right now the overloaded update service takes the shine off a pretty good product.
